What are the main advantages of a mini-split system?

What do "BTU" and "tonnage" mean?
BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a standard measurement of cooling (and heating) capacity. A higher BTU rating indicates a greater capacity to cool a larger space. Tonnage is another term for capacity, where one ton is approximately equal to 12,000 BTU.
How do I choose the right size/capacity (BTU) for my room?
Selecting the correct capacity is crucial for efficiency and comfort. An undersized unit will run constantly without cooling effectively, while an oversized unit will short-cycle, leading to poor humidity control and higher energy use. The required capacity depends on the room's size (square footage/meters), ceiling height, insulation quality, number of windows, and local climate. As a general reference, a 1.5-ton (approximately 18,000 BTU) unit may be suitable for an area of around 18 square meters, but a professional load calculation is recommended for accurate sizing.
Can I install a mini-split air conditioner myself?
While DIY installation kits are available, professional installation is highly recommended. A certified technician will ensure the system is correctly sized, properly mounted, and that the refrigerant lines are vacuumed and charged according to specifications.
